Song of Death

Song of Death

Media: Acryl on Canvas
Dimensions: 120 x 100 x 2 cm (H x W x D)

Painting of the song of death:
An African elephant stretching upwards is shown in a surrealistic style on a large format of 100 x 120 cm. What is special about it are the elephant bones scattered around its feet and the butterfly wings attached to its head as ears. The coloring is authentic both of the elephant and the wings, they are taken from the butterfly “Little Bear”, as is the pattern.

The picture shows a dead and alive elephant at the same time: death in the form of bones and tattered skin. This symbolizes the tragic fate that this species has suffered massively for decades; both physically and mentally. Many elephants are traumatized if they don’t die immediately, hunting for their ivory, which is still traded despite being internationally banned. The greed for ivory is unbroken and immense, especially on the Asian market. At least 20,000 elephants die an agonizing death every year because of their tusks, which are then later sold as carved decorative objects, for example.
