The second artwork from the Ostaps series “The pirated copies”. In this series, Ostap collaborates with formative figures (brands) of art history, whose works have established themselves as icons (logotypes) of current mass culture. What would Ostap’s joint works look like if these artists were alive today and got involved in a collaboration with Ostap? Collectively, the answers to this question make up the “pirated” series. In the modern art world, Ostap sees himself as an outsider who, like all those involved (actors), tries to manipulate the “rules of the game”. Misappropriation and intentionally amateurish, manual use of the unconventional materials is one of Ostap’s tricks – the artistic method that is also used in this series.
The first “pirated copy” – “Berliner Sternennacht”, which appeared in 2014, is also “Der fifth Schuh”, an unsolicited collaboration with Vincent Van Gogh – one of Ostap’s favorite artists. A homage to the series of Van Gogh’s well-known work “Sunflowers”.
