The Weight of Scars

The Weight of Scars

Media: Woven Textile and Photography
Dimensions: 253 x 612 cm (H x W x D)

This work was produced and presented for the first time in my solo exhibition “Bruises and Lustre” at MuHKA – Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerpen, Belgium.
“The Weight of Scars” is a 4 panel textile piece and 10 photographic images printed on forex plates which are attached to the woven textile with magnets.

This work relates to the heritage of a scarred, fractured landscape, the act of reconstruction and the weight that comes with such legacy. The 10 photographic circular plates are selected images of what remains today of the former mined area in the North Western part of Namibia which today lies empty, abandoned and even fenced off.
The images are details of cracked grounds, holes made in the ground and walls, abandoned massive concrete constructions, pipelines cutting through the landscape, etc. These are residues of once upon a time rich and fertile ground filled with promises of a better economy and lifestyle, now empty and drained out. The struggle for balance and repair of damages are constantly taking place in the world we live in and our bodies and landscapes are part of this process. “The Weight of Scars”, as the title suggest, relates to all these topics.

Materials: Yarns – viscose bast, mohair, polyester, bio cotton, linen, acrylic and inkjet print on 10 laser cut forex plates
