‘Veins Aligned’ is a ca. 26 metre sculpture that was made for the full length of the floor of gallery Ar/ge Kunst (Bolzano, Italy) and is composed of layers of glass and marble from the Lasa quarries, both materials having been crafted in collaboration with local experts. In this work the artist enters into a direct relationship with the architecture, imaginatively overstepping its walls and establishing a line of continuity with the landscape.
As indicated by the title, it is a gesture that aims to ‘align’ or make parallel histories and destinies of materials and geographies that may seem remote from each other but which actually belong to the same body.
Nkanga has experimented with various techniques in working with these raw materials. She pushes the limits of their appearance to bring out their organic mineral and fluid characteristics and the processes by which they are transformed.
The artist chose to work with the marble Lasa Venato Fior di Melo® from the Weisswasser quarry. Its veining ranges from yellow-gold to brown and grey to green, a warm colour with a name that reflects the reciprocity between the land of Val Venosta and its tradition of apple cultivation.
