Early Life and Artistic Beginnings

Ono was born in 1933 in Tokyo. As a child, Ono was exposed to art at a young age. Her father, Eisuke Ono, was a wealthy banker and art connoisseur; her mother, Isoko, was a pianist. The family moved to New York City in the late 1930s, where Ono attended exclusive private schools.

After World War II, Ono’s family returned to Japan. At age 18, Ono enrolled in philosophy courses at Gakushuin University. However, Ono dropped out after two semesters to pursue her passion for art.

In 1956, Ono married composer Toshi Ichiyanagi. The couple moved to New York City, where Ono immersed herself in the avant-garde art scene. Ono began creating conceptual artwork, including instructional paintings, performances, films, and music. Her work incorporated ideas of minimalism, feminism and anti-war sentiments.

Ono’s marriage to Ichiyanagi ended in divorce in 1962. Soon after, Ono met musician John Lennon at her art exhibit in London. The two began a romantic and artistic partnership, collaborating on music, art and activism until Lennon died in 1980.

Meeting John Lennon and the Beatles Years

Meeting John Lennon in 1966 at her art exhibit in London proved fateful for Yoko Ono. Lennon was intrigued by her experimental art and avant-garde sensibilities. A romance blossomed, and they married in 1969. This union with one of the most famous musicians of the 20th century thrust Ono into the spotlight and all the scrutiny and criticism that came with it.

Life with the Beatles

As Lennon’s new wife and partner, Ono joined him in the studio and on tour. Her presence was controversial and resented by some Beatles fans, who blamed her for the band’s eventual breakup. However, she also inspired some of Lennon’s most politically motivated and introspective songs, like:

  • “Imagine”

After The Beatles disbanded in 1970, Ono and Lennon retreated from the public spotlight but continued to record music together, releasing experimental rock albums like:

  • “Unfinished Music No.1: Two Virgins”

  • “Some Time in New York City”

Why Did the Beatles Break Up?

One of the main reasons for the Beatles’ breakup was internal conflict within the band. Over time, the members began to grow apart both personally and creatively. John Lennon and Paul McCartney, the group’s primary songwriters, had different visions for the band’s direction. This led to disagreements and tension, ultimately becoming too challenging to overcome.
