Refik Anadol was born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey. He embarked on his educational journey by obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in photography and video, followed by a Master of Fine Arts degree from Bilgi University in Istanbul. 

He later pursued further studies in the United States, enrolling in the Design Media Arts program at the University of California in Los Angeles, where he earned a second Master of Fine Arts degree. 

Currently, Anadol resides in Los Angeles, California, where he oversees the operations of Refik Anadol Studio and RAS LAB, an entity dedicated to researching and cultivating innovative approaches to data narratives and artificial intelligence.

  • He’s known for his temporary projects like the ‘Infinity Room,’ which transformed a room during the 2015 Istanbul Biennial into an abstract infinite moving space.

  • In 2018, Anadol illuminated the Walt Disney Concert Hall with ‘WDCH Dreams,’ a 12-minute data sculpture animation that celebrated the hall’s anniversary. 


The animation featured a blend of digitally abstracted photographs, audio, and video recordings from the concert hall’s archive.

  • Anadol’s innovative approach reached new heights with ‘Machine Hallucination’ in 2019, an immersive audiovisual installation at Artechouse in New York’s Chelsea Market. 


This project processed vast datasets of publicly available images of New York City, resulting in a mesmerizing experience for visitors.
