Caro Jost pursues an innovative form of representation of the search for traces. For this purpose, the conceptual artist began to build up her own personal material and photo archive in New York in 1998 and has since been collecting the material for her work on worldwide travels to art history sites, artists’ studios and archives. These are self-produced films, lost objects or documents that she collects in the archives and studios of her favourite artists, as well as traces and markings on the streets. Her artistic strategy is about capturing time, events and memories, capturing a moment and putting all this into a painterly and contemporary context.
This work is based on an invoice from Barnett Newman for his material purchases in January 1950. With the kind permission of The Barnett Newman Foundation, New York.
