The series Unfolding Coleoptera shows monochrome images of individual beetles against a black background. The title refers to the process of creating the images: the animals are first prepared, with the wings spread out completely. This unfolding is a time-consuming process that requires patience and instinct. Coleoptera is the scientific name of the beetle in biosystematics. The leathery appearing structure of the cover wings gave the order its name: Coleoptera (κολεόπτερα) = leather-hulled wing. On display is the complete Imago of the animals – the trained insect in the last life stage. The illustrations first recall drawings of zoological works as well as the work of Karl Blossfeldt, a pioneer of artistic nature photography. At the same time, the background and lighting of the images capture the aesthetics of professional product photography.
