In car shows, DIY or video games, some hostesses sometimes wear sexy outfits or disguises and are nicknamed booth babes (or simply babes). Although this practice is tending to disappear, it continues to exist in certain fields such as electronics or video games. This form of presentation has been widely denounced, because of the sexist image of women which would thus be conveyed, but also because of the useless nature of these hostesses, who generally have little knowledge of the product.
They have been banned in several salons, notably in video games at the Penny Arcade Expo or the Eurogamer Expo.
For her performance “Hostesses”, the artist was inspired by the black uniform-suit of hostesses present at airports or official and political events. He chooses to keep only the color of the tailor and to make the identity of his characters disappear so as to keep only the silhouette and the mouth which becomes the element symbolizing this function “being a hostess”, made up in red she is also a metaphor for femininity and even eroticism reminiscent of the red sole of the shoes worn by performance hostesses.
