MANNA MACHINE

Year:
Media: Algae (Chlorella vulgaris), glass, pump, plastic tubes. dimensions variable

The sculptures MANNA MACHINE (2009-2018) are bioreactors in which algae (Chlorella vulgaris) grow. The pipes constitute a drawing within the room and, comparable to the leaves of a plant, serve photosynthesis. The biomass thus forming is filtered, dried and processed into pigment. Fixed in oil or resin, the algae pigment becomes painting material for a series of paintings entitled HARVEST. Fermented and distilled, on the other hand, the algae are processed into the TONO BUNGAY tonic.
