The Silent Room

The Silent Room

Media: Mixed media
Dimensions: 733 x 163 x 278 cm (H x W x D)

This installation of injection-molded sculpting produces the building of a soy sauce association that represented a major Shodoshima industry. It creates a space associated with its location on Shodoshima, while generating an experience connecting Belgium in Europe with Japan in Asia that incorporates the cultural environments of both countries. The artist is always addressing the concepts of silence, tranquility, stasis, contemplation and integration through art. Common motifs in the artist’s work are sculptures with closed eyes, nature expressed through sculpture (a water lily pond, cherry blossom trees, stones) and cultural phenomena (a grand piano, a study, music). By also providing viewers with tea and soybean snacks, the piece creates a more active experience.
